Interview with Sean McGaughey

q) What is your name and what do you do?

a)My name is Sean McGaughey and I am an artist.

q)When did you really get into art?

a)I have been into art since I was a little kid, art/ making things.

q)How did you come to the realization that you should try your luck at art on a more serious level?

a)I don't think it was necessarily a conscious decision, me becoming an artist, there wasn't/ isn't anything I could think of doing. In a certain respect, it was a natural movement, something that felt right.

q)How did you discover the particular style that you have?

a)I wouldn't call it a style, it is more of a way to put thoughts and ideas out "there". It is, and I imagine will always be an ever evolving progression. The more you work, the more work begins to shift and transform, sometimes it is a conscious effort, other times it happens naturally.

q)How would you describe your style?

a)My work lately has been focusing on the idea of consumption. I present the ideas laced with irreverent humor directly influenced from comics/ cartoons and skateboard graphics of the early 90's.

q)Who or what influences your art?

a)The odd, out of context conversations I hear outside my studio window. A big influence on my current work is a film from William Klein "Mister Freedom", it opened up my scope of how to approach serious issues.

q)How often do you create a new piece?

a)I generally work everyday, somedays are more productive than others. How long a piece takes is usually decided by a few factors; how big the piece is, how long it takes me to understand the direction the piece is heading.

q)What kind of success have you had with your art?

a)Someone telling me they can relate to my work.

q)What would be the ultimate goal for you and your art?

a)To make a comfortable living.

q)What do you see as an accomplishment in the way of art?

a)Damien Hirst

q)What kind of message, if any, do you try to convey through your art?

a)I leave the narrative open, it is my intent to have the viewer look at my work at insert their experiences into my work, thus making the work exist.

q)Sum up your art in one word.

a)Irreverent

q)Any additional comments?
